In 2010, Consider Social Media Optimization

If the buzzword of the last decade was SEO, than the buzzword of this decade, at least for now, is SMO or social media optimization. As we embark on a new year and a new decade, the future of doing business online isn’t going to be how many hits a business’s website logged, but how many connections, friends and fans they have on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Developing a social media optimization plan is a key strategy to securing new business in 2010. The best way to implement a plan is for a business to prioritize which audience it would like to reach and decide which social sites will best reach that target audience.

Before delving into a social networking plan, it is best for businesses to test the waters to see which social media site works best for them. Since most small business owners don’t have the time necessary to invest in a good social networking strategy on their own, we suggest consulting with a firm that has experience in promoting businesses through social networking.

Gaining authority through social networking doesn’t happen overnight and businesses must be patient and allow their networks to grow.

We work with our clients over time to help them become friends with and follow people who would be interested in their products or services. When it comes to social networking, patience is key, and once a business implements a solid social networking plan, it will acquire more clients in no time.

Social Networks Can Boost SEO Rankings For Small Businesses

“Whether you are a small business owner, looking to increase your website’s search engine ranking, or an aspiring search engine optimization consultant, understanding how to use social networking sites for proper SEO is of the utmost importance,” says Crisafi. “That’s why our Expresso SEO training include social networking as part of search engine optimization training.”

According to Crisafi, maintaining a large-scale social media presence can reap serious benefits for a business and those that have numerous social media network profiles have a greater chance of garnering high search engine rankings.

“In order to successfully integrate social media networking profiles into an online marketing plan, we teach our students to use keywords prominently in the profile name,” says Crisafi. “We also suggest that businesses fill out as much profile information as possible without putting too much of the same information into multiple profiles, as this could have a negative effect on search engine ranking.”

Crisafi also notes that friendship is the name of the game when it comes to social networking, so including links that allow users to easily follow a company on Twitter or Facebook will help create incoming links from other profiles and ultimately boost search rankings.

With the advent of real-time search, a social media presence is even more critical for SEO campaigns.

Adjust Your SEO to the Yahoo/Microsoft Merger
Monday, December 21, 2009, 01:14 PM

By joining forces as a search engine platform, Microsoft and Yahoo are taking on Google in ways that neither search engine could do on their own. Although Google still maintains 70 percent of the search engine market, analysts predict a shift in user searches that a company’s hired SEO professional should be watching closely.

A knowledgeable SEO professional will continuously make changes to his or her client’s online marketing plan to keep up with the changing landscape of the Internet. The partial merger of Yahoo and Microsoft is a major change in that landscape.

Although regulatory approval in the U.S. and EU is still pending on the merger, insiders say that it is a done deal and Microsoft's Bing search engine will deliver results for queries from Yahoo's search portal. As both companies have noted, the deal will create a sustainable and compelling search alternative that will provide consumers, advertisers and publishers a choice.

I couldn’t agree more with that statement and our staff is already advising our many clients on how to get the most from this new deal.

What “Real-Time” Search Means for SEO
Sunday, December 13, 2009, 03:38 PM

Google’s new “real-time” search bridges the gap between social networking and search marketing.

The new feature is about as direct as it gets when it comes to social networking and search marketing. With this new search parameter, Google offers users real-time search results from Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and other social networking sites.

With the advent of Google’s real-time search engine features, now is the time for website owners to take advantage of social networking sites to drive traffic, if they have not done so already. While “real-time” searches are suddenly all the rage among search engine optimization experts, the concept has been in the works for quite some time.

Google has been working toward the roll-out of real-time search for years. Following a poor search engine performance from its own service, Google Finance, experts set out to create what it called a QDF algorithm, which determines which queries will be augmented with the most recent content available, in addition to the content with the highest page rank.

In other words, businesses that take advantage of Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites have the opportunity to really drive traffic these days.

Of course, Google’s new real-time search also has the potential for abuse among spammers and black hat search engine marketers.

In order for a company to ensure that they are using Google’s real-time search properly and above board, businesses should only hire a search engine optimization firm that not only has experience in social network marketing, but also adheres to organic, white hat http://www.dzineit.net]search engine optimization[/url] practices.

SEO Firm Discusses the Basic Principles of Website Optimization
Saturday, December 5, 2009, 06:03 PM
Posted by Administrator
There are three keyword principals that websites must follow in order to achieve success among the major search engines.

Understanding the art of SEO can be daunting, which is why so many business owners hire firms like dzine it to optimize their websites for better search engine placement. However, even if you are using an Internet marketing firm to optimize your website, it is good to know just what it takes to ensure that your ecommerce site has been set up for maximum performance.

The first rule of thumb is to know where to place important keywords. According to research done by major search engines like Google, website visitors tend to look at three sections of a web page the most; the top, the bottom, and the middle. These are the areas where your strongest content and most of your keywords and phrases should be placed.

The second principal is to pay close attention to the proximity and placement of your key words and terms. If we are talking about a website for a personal injury law firm in New York, the key phrases should be congruent.

New York personal injury law firm” is a good example.

Those words should be strung together, not placed haphazardly around the page or the search engines will not pick up on the theme of the website.

Finally, keyword density plays an important role in optimizing a webpage. Ideally, a page should feature a density of four percent. In other words, there should be no more or no less than four percent of the content made up keywords and phrases.

With search engines it is all about balance. If a website does not have enough keywords, it may be overlooked, and if it has too many, it may be ignored.

Organic SEO Beats PPC Advertising, Hands Down

A recent report has shown that businesses are still spending more than five times more money on pay-per-click advertising than they are on natural or organic search engine optimization techniques. The same report, however, shows that the organic search campaigns resulted in a higher rate of return and better overall productivity.

Internet marketing experts agree that these results reflect a change in the way people are shopping online and how companies like his are now handling online marketing efforts for clients.

These organic search engine optimization strategies have been tested and proven to work, not just by our staff but by other online marketing professionals over time. A company that specializes in organic search engine optimization can customize a package that can be successful regardless of the size or niche of the business.

Some of the most successful new SEO techniques include online press release publishing, article marketing, directory and search engine indexing, social networking and bookmarking. SEO experts agree that the target traffic that these techniques generate have a greater effect than the typical pay-per-click (PPC) campaign.

The average two-line PPC advertisement is quickly forgotten, if even noticed in the first place, but a quality article or press release will be re-read countless times, driving traffic to the company it serves.

SEO techniques are constantly in flux, due in part to changing user behaviors and buying trends.

Businesses that recognize this trend and put their online marketing plan in the hands of a professional SEO firm that has its finger on the pulse of Internet marketing, will reap long term benefits that are no longer be achieved through PPC advertising.

How to Benefit From Video SEO

According to a recent study, businesses can earn quality local traffic by creating and distributing, online, a video featuring their company. In fact, the study showed that businesses were thirty percent times more likely to garner local target traffic through video search engine optimization.

This fairly new technology allows website owners to associate a video about their product or service with relevant keywords and then distribute it online. The result, he says, is increased attention from Google and other major search engine which, in turn, should translate into better search engine placement for the featured business.

Video search engine optimization will result in a higher search engine ranking, more targeted traffic, particularly local traffic, and increased sales. Businesses that not only get their videos out there through free video websites such a YouTube, but post videos on their websites, see significant increases in interest among users.

In fact, video is one of the most popular components of a website these days and users are more likely to click on information videos before clicking on photos or reading through content.

Beware of Grey Hat SEO Techniques
Monday, November 9, 2009, 04:01 PM
Posted by Administrator
When it comes to search engine optimization, website developers must walk a fine line. Although a search engine’s purpose is to guide users to what it is they are looking for, search engine optimization is essentially a process by which a web developer tricks the search engine into bringing a site to the top.

However, there are ethical ways of optimizing a site for quality search engine ranking and there are unethical ways and the search engines pay very close attention to the ways in which a website makes its mark.

Search engine optimization experts and search engines are not natural enemies. The search engines actually give developers room to work, but they are always on the lookout for dirty tricks and they thoroughly police each and every optimized website.

It is easy for a website to get flagged by the search engines, even if it is the result of a genuine mistake, and it can take months to correct the problem and get that site re-indexed into the search engine. Often, whether malicious or not, search engines will penalize websites that appear to be practicing “grey hat” SEO techniques. Grey hat SEO techniques are those that fall somewhere between legitimate techniques and spam.

Maliciously, grey hat techniques are used when a website is desperate to quickly boost its search engine ranking. Patience is the key and can mean the difference between a site’s optimization being labeled grey hat or white hat.

A technique known as “cloaking,” is a typical grey hat SEO technique where content is presented differently to users than it is to the search engines. Cloaking raises suspicion among search engines, but there are times when cloaking is essential and not malicious at all.

There are many legitimate reasons to use cloaking techniques, particularly with websites that feature image-based content or where the majority of content is located in members-only areas. A reputable search engine optimization firm will contact search engines directly to apprise them of such situations and wait for approval. Only a search engine optimization expert who understands the ramifications of grey hat optimization will know that this is the white hat approach to the situation.

It is the fine line between grey hat and white hat search engine optimization that makes SEO just as much of an art as it is a science.

Experienced search engine optimization professionals will have already developed an understanding for what is acceptable and what is not when it comes to optimizing. That’s why having a search engine optimization expert on-hand for your website development project is always a must.

Communicating Like A Search Engine Optimization Expert
Tuesday, November 3, 2009, 05:33 AM
Posted by Administrator
Search engine optimization has everything to do with communication. It’s about communication between a website and the major search engines, and communication between website owners and their search engine marketing consultant.

To achieve this level of communication, there are key terms that every website owner should know when talking to a search engine optimization (SEO) consultant.

When developing a search engine marketing plan it is all about tags. A good SEO specialist will analyze the existing content of a site; create a comprehensive keyword list; and formulate a plan to use SEO techniques.

Once the full plan has been mapped out, keywords and terms will be placed within the text of the webpage. In addition, these words and terms will also be placed within the hidden codes of the website so that the site will better communicate with the search engines.

Knowing the following terms can help website owners better understand what a professional SEO expert is talking about when they discuss an SEO plan:

Keywords Meta Tag – This is a hidden HTML code within a website that lists the keywords used on a particular page. The purpose of this tag is to assist search engines in finding the keywords on a particular page.

Description Tag – This tag provides a short description about the page.

Long Tail Keywords – SEO plans involve the use of single keywords or short phrases. Short phrases are known as long-tail keywords. Such phrases may not offer high search engine placement, but will shine in more focused searches.

Search engine optimization is an art and can only be achieved by competent professionals. Unfortunately, many website owners want to be involved in their company’s SEO plan. Knowing the language is the perfect start.

Fonts Are Important To Website Design and SEO
Monday, November 2, 2009, 06:10 PM
Posted by Administrator
Both proper search engine optimization and a visually stimulating design are the two most important factors to consider when designing a website. However, there are seemingly small design details, such as fonts, that often get lost in the rush to create the perfect web presence.

So many designers tend to focus on the big picture, which is important, but they often lose sight of the details. Particularly the details that many people may think are minor when, the truth is, they are actually quite important.

Font selection can have an incredible impact on a website’s visitors.

As a company that deals in both website design and graphic design for other mediums, our professional designers recognize the importance of fonts when it comes to marketing a product or service. Our graphic designers spend countless hours considering fonts when it comes to a print marketing campaign and website design should be no different.

Choosing the right font can also play a role in a website’s search engine optimization (SEO) plan.

Unusual fonts can actually present SEO problems, but that can also pose a problem for website owners who want particular fonts to set their site apart from others. There are ways around this issue, however, that only a professional website designer understands.

One way is to embed unusual fonts within a graphic, but even the presentation of fonts within a site’s content are important to search engines. The Google search engine, for example, takes bold, colored and other highlighted text into account as noting words or terms of significance.

There has to be a balance though, because a website should not annoy visitors with overused highlighting tactics. That is why it is important for companies to choose an all-in-one website development and website design firm.

Google Features Are Essential To Organic SEO Success
Monday, November 2, 2009, 09:08 AM
Posted by Administrator
The Google search engine is one of the main reasons people seek to properly optimize their website. The reason is that Google has always been the most popular search engine on the Internet.

With the recent deal that brought Microsoft’s own search engine, Bling, to Yahoo, Google has had to add a little juice to its already popular search engine, to keep in line with its new competition. This has forced many website owners to concentrate on some exciting Google features that were likely not considered when their sites were first developed.

One of those features is Google’s “local results.”

Google has done a great job of geo-targeting its search results. Any company that relies on local business needs to take advantage of this specialized Google search function.

Another popular function of Google’s search engine is its “recent results” feature, which boosts sites with recently updated relevant content.

This is why it is imperative to keep a website’s content fresh.

Other useful features include Google’s “related results” which gives users suggested keyword terms related to their search, Google’s “timeline” feature which shows the frequency by which pages have been updated in relation to certain search terms, and “Google Local” which, if taken advantage of properly, will post relevant sites within Google’s map feature.

With so many options out there for those searching for information through Google, the possibilities are endless for website owners who want to dominate their particular market. To do so, however, website owners must rely on professional search engine optimization experts who are familiar with everything that Google has to offer.

Don’t Dismiss the Power of Internal Links
Tuesday, October 27, 2009, 03:28 PM
Posted by Administrator
While a lot of attention is given to a website’s external links in relation to proper search engine optimization, many website owners and developers fail to recognize that a site’s internal links are just as important.

A website that features well-structured internal links can often score a higher ranking than a website with poorly-structured external links. In addition to boosting your website’s authority, internal links make all of your website’s pages visible to search engine spiders, and help build keyword density.

Updating a website’s internal link structure can actually be quite easy. However, if no thought was given to that structure during the site’s initial development, more intense work may be necessary.

A professional search engine optimization team will understand the importance of internal links and know exactly how to utilize them to a website’s advantage. Quality internal link structure is essential to ensure that a site gets the attention and the search engine ranking that it deserves.

There is little use in having a twenty page website if only three of those pages are being crawled by major search engines. This is just one of the ways that a good SEO firm can help turn your website around and help you compete against others in your market.

Link Popularity in Search Engine Optimization
Friday, October 23, 2009, 05:24 PM
Posted by Administrator
Link popularity has emerged as one of the buzzwords in the search engine optimization community. This was aided in large part by its introduction as a key factor in Google's web page ranking algorithms. In fact, the term 'link popularity' has often been used interchangeably with the search engine's branded version, called PageRankT.

The underlying theory is that, if other (high-quality) sites are linking to yours, then your web site must be important and, therefore, deserves a higher ranking than it would otherwise have. The more quality, relevant incoming links to your page, the higher it will rank.

One might argue that not all search engines factor in or give more weight to link popularity in their ranking algorithms, so why bother? Well, Google does, and since it is possibly the world's number one search engine, it is quite understandable why link building has become an essential search engine optimization strategy for many webmasters.

And there are other reasons why building link popularity should be a part of your SEO strategy too.

* Web users visiting other sites will be able to find your site too (more traffic for you)
* Links serve as trails for search engine spiders (robots) to follow, find and index or re-index your site (getting linked to a site that's already been indexed increases your site's chances of being visited by the spiders too)

But before you even start link building, it is important that you optimize your internal linkages first.

* Make sure that your site is 'crawlable.'
o Don't use Javascript when making your links as they can't be read by spiders
o Pages that spiders can't find won't get indexed, even if they've been optimized
o Avoid URLs with long numbers because Google won't spider any URL that looks like it has a Session ID in it
o Make sure your pages always link out (to your site's other pages)
o Structure the internal links so that targeted search terms are reinforced
* Use link/anchor text (the text that is clicked on when clicking on a link)
o Syntax: link text
o target page's main search term/topic should be included in the link text
o don't use identical link text for every link that links to a page
* Conserve/Distribute Link Weight
o more important pages should be linked to more often within the site
o SLA pages and the like need not have a link from each page
o minimize links to external sites

Advice on Proper Organic SEO
Friday, October 23, 2009, 05:24 PM
Posted by Administrator
There is no real secret to proper SEO regardless of what your current web developer tells you.

Sure, search engine optimization is an art and a true professional can help you boost your search engine ranking quicker than the average Joe, but for those who self publish, or even those who want to keep tabs on the web development company that is managing their site, there a few time-tested techniques that will certainly make a difference.

I offer the following advice:

Proper Search Engine Optimization is the Key to Successful Web Development

While many web development firms will try and convince you that pay-per-click advertising and banner campaigns are the way to go when it comes to increasing your online presence among popular search engines. Although these methods help, proper search engine optimization for your website, from the very early stages of your web development project, is the key to success.

A Good Website Design Should Be More than Just a Pretty Picture

As I noted above, proper professional SEO work begins during the initial phases of web development which is why it is imperative that you know the keywords and phrases that you wish to target before your site gets off the ground. In doing so, you or your website developer can develop your website around your key phrases.

Don’t be Afraid to Spice up your Website with Flash

Don’t let anyone talk you out of adding a Flash component to your website.

Historically, sites heavy in Flash fared rather poorly when it came to search engine rankings. However, a good graphic design firm, with expertise in Flash video and animation, can actually utilize multimedia to increase search engine ranking and make your site more visually pleasing as well.

Links are Important

When it comes to linking, links from your site are actually just as valuable for good search engine ranking, if not more, than links to your site. However, there can also be too much of a good thing.

The difference between having a couple of links on each page of your site to having ten or more is astounding. The latter can actually hurt your search engine rankings, so you want to be wise about linking to other sites.

Also, when linking to a site, be sure that it is relevant and trusted.

Follow these simple rules and you will see your search engine ranking dramatically improve.

SEO and Social Network Article Value

Everyone is into social networking. Its become the new buzz word in optimization. Just say social networking and it must be great for optimization. I honestly don't think most people know what they are talking about. They heard something and they are repeating what they heard. Like that bad movie that someone heard it was the best. The buzz came from the source.

My take don't put your content on any website that sells your keywords to other companies, don't put your content on sites that will not link back to your website.

Social networking is great to promote yourself if you have a following. Just like club or party promotion you need the following. Stop letting sites swipe your leads because they made you think its best for you.

Are you really that foolish?

Lack of Competition Doesn’t Mean You Should Ignore Web Page Optimization
Friday, October 23, 2009, 05:21 PM

A quality search engine optimization plan is an essential part of online marketing, even if your company is the only game in town.

Search engine optimization is essential in today’s competitive online market. You may think, for example, that because you are the only company in a particular region that sells pink widgets, that you will automatically be found by clients who you’re your product. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

In fact, if potential customers are looking for a product that only you or a handful of competitors carry and they cannot find it easily through an Internet search, they will likely become frustrated and give up. A website that is not search engine friendly can actually be just as bad as not having a website at all.

The purpose of having a website is to create a comprehensive online presence, regardless of the product or service offered. Without a search engine friendly website, your online presence is going to be weak, to say the least.

There are a number of other benefits to proper search engine optimization as well. By having a strong online presence with a targeted search engine marketing plan, you can increase your business by reaching out to customers outside of your traditional target area. In addition, proper search engine optimization gives a website, and the business it represents, an authority that will translate into sales.
